There is a liquefaction risk with certain cargoes, especially in the case of iron, nickel and bauxite ores or concentrates. LIQUEFACTION is a phenomenon wherein wet ore loses a large percentage of its shear resistance, when subjected to transient or periodic loading, and flows in liquid-like manner. Since the holds of bulk carriers are not designed to carry liquid, the cargo may shift during a roll, posing a significant risk of vessel capsizing.
